Day 1: Arrival in Paro – Drive to Thimphu ( 52 km, approx. 1 hour 20 minutes )
Your journey to Bhutan begins with a flight on Druk Air, Bhutan’s national airline, arriving in Paro Valley before noon. After completing visa formalities and collecting your baggage, you will meet our representative, who will escort you on a leisurely one-hour drive to the capital city, Thimphu (Altitude: 7,658 feet above sea level).
Thimphu is situated in a large valley traversed by the Wangchhu River and surrounded by high peaks. The drive follows the river, passing through several picturesque villages.
Upon arrival, check in at your hotel. After settling in, lunch will be served.
The rest of the day is reserved for rest and altitude acclimatization. We recommend bringing basic medication for headaches and bowel issues that may arise due to low temperatures and high altitude.
In the evening, visit Buddha Dordenma, a gigantic Shakyamuni Buddha statue and one of the most visited sites in Thimphu.
Overnight stay at a hotel in Thimphu.
Morning:
After breakfast, proceed to Punakha Valley, which served as the winter capital of Bhutan for over three centuries.
En route, visit Dochula Pass, also known as Druk Wangyal Chortens, built in honor of the King’s leadership and service. The site features a cluster of 108 chortens.
The drive ascends gradually to Dochula Pass (10,300 feet above sea level), offering magnificent views of the Himalayan mountain range.
Upon arrival in Punakha, visit Punakha Dzong, an outstanding example of Bhutanese architecture, located at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers. It served as the religious and administrative center of Bhutan until the mid-1950s.
Next, visit a suspension bridge and begin a hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, passing through rice terraces and pine forests. At the top, enjoy superb panoramic views.
Later, drive to Lobesa and take a short 20-minute hike to Chimi Lhakhang, a temple dedicated to the Divine Madman, where women come to pray for fertility.
Overnight stay at a hotel in Punakha.
Today, drive to Paro.
Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan.
After lunch, visit the National Museum, housed in a 17th-century watchtower above Paro Dzong. The structure is uniquely shaped like a conch shell. It once served as a defense tower and later became a museum displaying ancient weapons, textiles, thangka paintings, and Bhutanese artifacts.
As the museum houses sacred religious objects, visitors are required to remove their shoes and walk in a clockwise direction inside.
Next, visit Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong), meaning “Fortress of a Heap of Jewels.” Originally built in the 15th century and expanded in 1646, it is one of the finest examples of Bhutanese architecture.
The central tower and galleries feature intricate woodwork and traditional Buddhist paintings depicting cosmology.
You may recognize the dzong from the 1993 film Little Buddha, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci.
Cross the traditional wooden bridge, Nyamai Zam, spanning the Paro River. In ancient times, the bridge was dismantled during wars to protect the dzong.
